In the August issue meet five local high school seniors who are taking steps to effect change.

In 2006, the Maple Grove Teen Center and the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes began hosting an annual event that many parents and kids look forward to in the Maple Grove area.

 

Wayne Estenson canned his first pickle 35 years ago under the supervision of his future mother-in-law. “Before I could take her daughter out on a date, we would have to help pack cucumbers for pickling,” he recounts. To this day, pickles are his favorite canned food to eat.

“A few years ago, my friend in Buffalo did a 5K and said she runs with her girlfriends in the area. I thought to myself, ‘I wish I had something like that in Maple Grove.’ It’s not like you can be a creeper on a trail, meet someone running, and then ask if you can join them!”

 

In the musical Newsies, now playing at Chanhassen Dinner Theaters (CDT), Les Jacobs is an almost 10-year-old boy, whose older brother, David, and another newsboy Jack are involved in a strike against a powerful newspaper publisher.

 

Let’s face it; high school students have a lot on their collective plates. School. Work. Extracurricular activities. Being a teenager. Parents know that getting their kid to plan beyond the next five minutes can be a Herculean task, but high school can go by quickly.

 

Sometimes we just need a little nudge—a tiny bit of inspiration to get us up and out into the pastoral vistas of Maple Grove. Thankfully, the Maple Grove Parks and Recreation services offers opportunities for walking and biking that encourage participants to get a move on!

 

Ah, August—the dog days of summer. We are weeks away from kids going back to school, two months away from raking leaves and, sorry to say, three months away from snow.

 

Growing up isolated in the mountains of Idaho, formal education was absent from Tara Westover’s childhood. By sheer willpower, she overcame the survivalist mentality of her tight-knit family and earned a PhD from the University of Cambridge.

 

The Maple Grove Historical Preservation Society was formed in 1994 as a non-profit organization with the purpose of education and preserving the rich history of the city. Maple Grove was founded in the 1850s by explorer Louis P. Garvais.

 

It’s obvious the coneflower, or echinacea, with its show-stopping color, is hard to miss in any garden, but it also benefits the wildlife all summer and even into fall and winter. The coneflower is great for multiple winged species.

 

Ruby Miller, 15, has been Irish dancing for eight years, and her love for the sport continues to grow.
